Trey Lance Has Questionable Fantasy Value With Jimmy Garappolo In San Francisco

Trey Lance’s situation might be the most interesting of all rookie QBs in terms of fantasy football. The football world has a clearer picture of what will happen to the other four next season, but Lance is an enigma. It all depends on how the 49ers view Lance in comparison to Jimmy Garappolo. The 49ers obviously value Lance, as they traded up to select him third overall in the 2021 Draft, but is he going to start? Some think not. Whether or not he starts will likely also depend on how well the 49ers perform this season. If they play well, Trey Lance may not see the field the entire year, but if they struggle, Lance may get an early chance to show his skills.

Despite the questions surrounding which quarterback will be starting for the 49ers as the season progresses, it is possible that both have at least some fantasy success, likely around the middle of the pack of fantasy QBs. In other words, I would not start either quarterback in either of my starting QB slots (because 1 QB leagues are soft), unless it is certain that one or the other is starting. Either quarterback also works as a solid backup, but I would not send in the chips for lance unless your league is a dynasty league.

Regardless, the 49ers have weapons around them to ensure both QBs have a decent year. The 49ers dealt with a plethora of injures last year, but they will surprise a lot of teams this year. The only reason why the 49ers did not win the Super Bowl in 2019 is because of Garappolo, so think of Trey Lance as an insurance policy.

TL // DR: Trey Lance is a yes for Dynasty Leagues. For a redraft league, he’s a risky choice.
